In a move that highlights Barcelona’s long-term strategy, sporting director Deco has announced what he considers the most crucial signing for the club’s future.
Following a historic treble-winning campaign under Hansi Flick — claiming La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup — Barcelona is now focused on reinforcing its attack with a new winger.
Deco confirmed that the club has reached an agreement with Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams to join during the current summer transfer window. Williams is reportedly eager to make the switch, motivated by the chance to play alongside his close friend and Spanish teammate, Lamine Yamal.
According to Foot Mercato, Barcelona and Williams have agreed verbally on a six-year deal that would keep him at Camp Nou until 2031. The final hurdle is reaching terms with Athletic Bilbao to secure his transfer.
Williams’ contract includes a €62 million release clause, and Barça will need to settle with the Basque club in order to activate it. If completed, Williams is set to earn around €12 million per year with the Catalan side.
Hansi Flick gave the green light for the signing after Liverpool declined to sell winger Luis Díaz, prompting Barcelona to shift their focus to Williams as their top attacking target.
