Oriol Romeu Set for Key Talks with Barcelona Amid Uncertain Future Under Flick
Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu is expected to hold important discussions with sporting director Deco as doubts emerge about his role in the squad ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Now 33, Romeu has returned to the club following a loan spell at Girona, but with just one year left on the three-year contract he signed in 2023, his place under new head coach Hansi Flick is far from guaranteed.
According to Mundo Deportivo (via Barça Universal), Romeu is seeking clarity on his future, sensing that he may not be in Flick’s main plans. The German manager has introduced a tactical shift, including a double-pivot midfield system that has seen the likes of Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casado, and even Eric García take on deeper roles.
Romeu was originally brought in as an affordable, experienced option to add depth and defensive cover in midfield. However, the emergence of younger talents and Barcelona’s need to cut costs could reduce his involvement.
The club has already offloaded Clément Lenglet and Álex Valle, and further departures — including Ansu Fati — are expected as Barcelona looks to create financial room for new signings.
Although Romeu isn’t actively looking to leave, he wants a clear picture of where he stands before preseason begins. If a significant role isn’t offered, a loan or permanent move could be on the tabl
