After Wirtz: Hughes not slowing down as Liverpool on the cusp of taking big step in £45m pursuit

Liverpool are already looking to add another signing after Florian Wirtz as the Reds show no signs of slowing their summer spending.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ might be the title of a famous American sitcom, but Liverpool clearly have no intention of curbing their ambitions in this transfer window.

The Reds have already completed four big additions under new boss Arne Slot — Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi, and their £116m record signing, Florian Wirtz, announced on Friday.

Next up could be Milos Kerkez, with a deal close to being finalized. Even after that, Liverpool don’t plan on stopping.

According to The Telegraph, the club is poised to make a substantial bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, and they’re already well on their way.

Liverpool near personal terms with Guehi
As reported by TEAMtalk on Saturday, Liverpool are “very close to agreeing personal terms” with the 24-year-old England centre-back. Once that’s done, they can begin formal negotiations with Palace.

Although the Eagles rate Guehi at £70m, they might accept closer to £45m this summer due to his contract expiring in a year. Liverpool are hoping to move quickly to avoid being drawn into a transfer battle for the highly rated defender.

No official bid has been lodged just yet, but the two clubs are expected to open talks in the coming days.

Liverpool aim to move fast on Guehi
With Jarell Quansah’s anticipated transfer to Bayer Leverkusen progressing rapidly, Liverpool are wasting no time in finding a top-quality replacement at centre-back.

Jarell Quansah, who currently holds Liverpool’s No.78 jersey, is expected to command a £30m fee if his move to Germany goes through — a sum that could help fund a swoop for Guehi, provided Palace can be persuaded to part with the captain who led them to a historic FA Cup triumph last month.

If an agreement on personal terms is reached, it would indicate that the 24-year-old is open to a switch to the Premier League champions. Hughes has already shown his determination — as seen in his relentless pursuit of Wirtz — and is capable of negotiating a deal below the seller’s initial asking price.

Guehi was lauded by Micah Richards for his “calm and composed” displays on England’s route to the Euro 2024 final (BBC Sport). Securing a proven Premier League talent, homegrown and approaching his peak years, for around £45m would be an astute move for Liverpool.

Though the chase for Guehi is still in its early stages, the Reds appear to be acting with remarkable speed to bolster their defensive ranks once again this summer.
