Ibrahima Konaté’s future at Liverpool appears increasingly uncertain. The French centre-back has yet to agree to a contract extension, with his current deal running until the summer of 2026. That’s sparking concern at Anfield, especially after Trent Alexander-Arnold left on a free transfer to Real Madrid this summer.
With speculation mounting over interest from Madrid once again, supporters may have to brace for a similar outcome in 2026. According to Mark Brus of CaughtOffside, Konaté is unhappy with the terms on offer, which feature performance-based bonuses rather than the guaranteed £200,000-a-week salary he is looking for.
Both Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. Liverpool, however, are determined to keep hold of Konaté this summer to avoid losing him for nothing in a year’s time.
Compounding the issue is Liverpool’s lack of depth at the back. The club recently sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £30 million, leaving Joe Gomez as the main cover for Virgil van Dijk and Konaté. Although Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch could theoretically fill in at centre-back, it would be a risky move for Liverpool to stand pat without bringing in reinforcements — especially with Konaté’s long-term status unresolved.
As a result, Liverpool have begun monitoring Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, whose own contract also expires in 2026. Given the circumstances, many believe the Reds could make a move if the price is right. Even if they do eventually resolve Konaté’s contract, it seems increasingly likely that the club will explore options like Guehi to shore up their defensive.
