Barcelona Still Owe Messi Nearly €6M in Deferred Wages — Payment Due This Monday
Almost five years after Lionel Messi’s departure, Barcelona still haven’t closed the financial chapter with their former captain.
According to Diario AS, Messi is set to receive a deferred payment of €5.95 million from Barcelona this coming Monday — money owed from his salary that was postponed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He’s not the only one still waiting on deferred wages. Other current or former players like Ronald Araújo, Pedri, Ansu Fati, and Iñaki Peña are also reportedly expecting similar payments as part of agreements made during the financial strain of the pandemic.
In contrast, players such as Marc-André ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong declined wage deferrals. Instead, they opted to extend their contracts, allowing the club to spread out salary payments more manageably over time.
La Liga president Javier Tebas recently commented on Barcelona’s financial obligations, saying, “Barcelona must follow the rules whether it’s Haaland, Messi, or Nico Williams,” in response to criticism from Athletic Club.
