Liverpool could smash their own British transfer record again this summer — but it hinges on a pivotal contract decision at a Premier League rival.
According to Graeme Bailey via Rousing the Kop, Newcastle United are in ongoing talks to tie down Alexander Isak to a new long-term deal. However, Liverpool’s recruitment team is keeping a close eye on developments, ready to pounce if the Swedish forward opts not to commit his future to St James’ Park.
“Isak has always been on Liverpool’s radar,” Bailey explained. “I’m confident in the information we’ve received — this interest is very real.”
The 25-year-old striker enjoyed a sensational campaign, netting 27 goals for Newcastle, including the decisive strike in their Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool. Given those heroics, it’s no surprise the Reds are monitoring his situation closely.
Bailey added that Newcastle are willing to stretch their wage structure to retain Isak — a move that shows just how critical he is to their project. But despite their efforts, the contract saga is reportedly approaching a key turning point, and Liverpool are poised to act if negotiations fall through.
For Liverpool fans, this news arrives amid uncertainty surrounding Darwin Núñez, whose form and relationship with new boss Arne Slot have prompted questions about his long-term role. The addition of a proven, elite-level No.9 could be a major summer priority.
Liverpool have already broken the British transfer record this window by landing Florian Wirtz for £116 million, but Bailey claims they may not be finished.
“A bid in the region of £120–130 million might be enough to tempt Newcastle,” Bailey stated — but only if Isak rejects the proposed extension.
The club is also believed to be exploring other attacking options, though few boast Isak’s blend of youth, top-flight experience, and clinical finishing.
Newcastle paid £63 million to sign the Swede from Real Sociedad in 2022 — a fee that now looks like a bargain. With his reputation soaring and his prime years still ahead, Isak could represent a massive statement signing for any club bold enough to make a move.
But everything hinges on one thing: Will he sign the new deal, or seek a fresh challenge elsewhere? If it’s the latter, Liverpool may well be first in line.
