Romano: Liverpool pursuing deal for £86m-rated ‘exciting’ striker tipped for stardom

Liverpool Eyeing Hugo Ekitike Amid Uncertainty Over Darwin Nunez’s Future

Liverpool are actively exploring options to bolster their attacking line-up this summer, with growing uncertainty surrounding Darwin Nunez’s future at the club. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are preparing for a possible high-profile departure, and plans are already in motion should Nunez leave.

The Uruguayan forward has been heavily linked with a move to Napoli, with the Serie A side maintaining strong interest. However, his transfer fee remains a potential hurdle.

Should Nunez exit Anfield, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike has emerged as a key candidate to fill the void. Florian Plettenberg reports that Ekitike is one of three forwards currently on Liverpool’s radar. Meanwhile, Christian Falk has revealed that the 23-year-old French striker is valued at around €100 million (£85.8 million).

Romano Shares Latest on Ekitike Interest

In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed Liverpool’s pursuit of Ekitike, but urged fans to remain patient.

“Liverpool are working on this deal,” he said. “They’re discussing the possibility of signing Hugo Ekitike, but their current focus is on resolving Darwin Nunez’s situation. Negotiations with Napoli are still ongoing.”

Romano emphasized that while Ekitike remains a priority, any serious move will likely depend on whether Nunez is sold. “It’s not something that will happen overnight,” he added. “Supporters should not expect an immediate breakthrough.”

Sales May Drive Incoming Transfers

While Newcastle’s Alexander Isak is reportedly Liverpool’s top striker target, his £120 million valuation makes a deal unlikely—especially after the club recently splashed out a record £116 million on Florian Wirtz.

Ekitike, though still a costly option at £85 million, appears to be a more attainable target—especially if Liverpool can recover a significant fee, possibly around £60 million, from Nunez’s departure.

Football analyst Mohamed Mohamed has praised Ekitike’s pace, technical prowess, and finishing, calling him an “exciting” player with elite potential. The Frenchman had an impressive campaign last season, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists in 48 matches.

What’s Next for Liverpool?

Romano’s report suggests Liverpool are prepared to act but may need to make room financially before finalizing any marquee signings. A sale of Nunez could open the door for a serious move for Ekitike, but the situation remains fluid.

With the summer transfer window open until late August, this saga may drag on for several more weeks. Still, fans can take comfort in knowing Liverpool are firmly in the hunt for a top-class striker—and are positioning themselves to act when the time is right.
