Real Madrid fans think it is time for a ‘difficult conversation’ about one player – despite their 1-0 victory over Juventus in the Club World Cup.
Gonzalo Garcia Fires Real Madrid Into Club World Cup Quarterfinals Amid Rudiger Criticism
Young striker Gonzalo Garcia scored the decisive goal as Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup with a narrow victory. The breakthrough came from a well-placed cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who registered his first assist for the club in just his fourth appearance.
Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio was outstanding, keeping his side in contention with a series of crucial saves, especially after the break when Real Madrid began to dominate.
The win brings Los Blancos a step closer to securing their first trophy under manager Alonso. However, not all was smooth sailing—fans voiced growing concern over Antonio Rüdiger’s form.
Back in the starting XI for the last two matches following an injury layoff, Rüdiger has struggled to convince. With Raul Asencio suspended during the previous round against Salzburg, the German international was given a run of starts but failed to impress.
One concerned fan posted, “Never thought I’d say this, but I’m getting nervous with Rüdiger in that back line.” Another added, “I’m really not liking what I’m seeing from Rüdiger—on or off the ball.” A third simply stated, “Sooner or later, we need to have a conversation about Rüdiger.”
In response to ongoing defensive issues, Real Madrid activated the £50 million release clause of Spanish international Dean Huijsen, signing him from Bournemouth. Huijsen has quickly settled into the team, starting all four of Real’s Club World Cup matches and delivering assured performances.
The club has also relied on Aurelien Tchouameni as a makeshift centre-back during the tournament. Though naturally a midfielder, he has adapted well, shifting roles as needed.
Injuries continue to hamper Real’s options at the back. David Alaba has managed just 14 appearances since returning from an ACL tear suffered in December 2023 and is once again sidelined. Meanwhile, Eder Militao is still recovering from the same injury and remains unavailable for the competition.
Despite the backline concerns, Real’s progress under Alonso remains on track, with young talents stepping up and the team edging closer to silverware.
