Ivan Rakitić Announces Retirement, Closing the Chapter on a Glorious Career
Former Barcelona and Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitić has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned over two decades at the highest level.
The 37-year-old confirmed his decision in an emotional message shared on social media, expressing gratitude to the clubs, teammates, coaches, and fans who supported him throughout his journey. Rakitić wrote:
“After 20 unforgettable years, it’s time to say goodbye to the game that gave me everything. I’m proud of every step, every challenge, and every triumph along the way. Thank you to everyone who stood by me—this is not the end, just a new beginning.”
Rakitić rose to prominence at Sevilla, where he captained the team to a UEFA Europa League title in 2014. His performances earned him a move to FC Barcelona, where he became a key figure under Luis Enrique’s treble-winning side. During his six-year spell at Camp Nou, Rakitić made over 300 appearances, winning four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys, two Spanish Super Cups, and the 2015 UEFA Champions League.
Internationally, Rakitić earned 106 caps for Croatia, playing a crucial role in their unforgettable run to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, where they finished runners-up to France. His partnership with Luka Modrić in midfield is considered one of the finest in Croatian football history.
In 2020, Rakitić returned to Sevilla for a second stint, bringing leadership and experience to the squad before eventually transferring to Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia, where he played his final professional matches.
Tributes poured in from former teammates, coaches, and fans around the world, celebrating Rakitić’s intelligence on the pitch, tireless work ethic, and humility off it. FC Barcelona also paid homage, stating:
“Thank you for everything, Ivan. You will always be part of the Barça family.”
As he steps away from the game, Rakitić hinted at future plans involving football, possibly in a coaching or ambassadorial role. For now, he leaves behind a legacy defined by elegance, dedication, and silverware.
