Liverpool: Ornstein Delivers Clear Verdict on Isak Exit as Newcastle Eye Ekitike Amid Competition from Reds, Chelsea
Newcastle United are actively exploring the transfer market this summer, with growing reports that they are preparing to challenge Liverpool and Chelsea for the signing of striker Hugo Ekitike.
So far, the Magpies have made just one signing—teen prospect Antonito Cordero from Malaga—but are making steady progress on deals for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.
Once those transfers are finalized, Newcastle are expected to turn their focus to reinforcing their attack. Despite having Alexander Isak—who scored an impressive 27 goals during the 2024/25 season—the club is seeking to strengthen its forward options, particularly after choosing not to renew Callum Wilson’s contract.
This renewed pursuit has seen Newcastle re-enter the race for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, a striker valued at around €100 million. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Newcastle have joined Liverpool, Chelsea, and other top clubs in showing interest.
“Hugo Ekitike continues to attract Premier League interest, with Newcastle keen,” Romano reported. “Liverpool and Chelsea had initial talks in June, while Saudi clubs Al Hilal and Al Qadsiah also made inquiries—though Ekitike prefers to stay in Europe.”
Given Newcastle’s fresh approach for Ekitike, some speculated it might signal a potential departure for Alexander Isak, who has been previously linked with Liverpool and Arsenal. However, David Ornstein of The Athletic has dismissed those rumors.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Back Pages Today podcast, Ornstein said:
“A sale of Alexander Isak is not on Newcastle’s agenda. They want to keep him, ideally renew his contract. Of course, top clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal would be interested if he were available—but Newcastle have no intention of opening that door. And if they ever did, the price would be sky-high.”
In short, while Newcastle are active in the striker market and could move for Ekitike, Isak remains firmly in their long-term plans—despite interest from Premier League giants like Liverpool.
