During the ongoing summer transfer window, sources from within Atlético Madrid suggest an unexpected development that could significantly reshape the team’s midfield.
A key decision is nearing regarding the potential departure of one of the club’s standout players, which has prompted head coach Diego Simeone to swiftly focus on a rising name in La Liga that has recently drawn widespread attention.
According to insiders, the player in question is close to finalizing a surprising transfer, partly influenced by a personal connection to one of football’s iconic figures. The move appears to be in its final stages, with Atlético’s technical staff already exploring alternative options.
Leaked details indicate that Rodrigo De Paul is on the verge of leaving the Wanda Metropolitano to join Inter Miami—the MLS side that features Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. De Paul has reportedly given initial approval to the deal, and Inter Miami’s leadership is confident the signing will be completed soon, ahead of the MLS playoff run.
In response, Simeone has wasted no time in searching for a suitable replacement, setting his sights on Barcelona’s rising star, Fermín López.
López impressed with his performances last season for the Catalan club, earning a regular place in the starting lineup and even making his debut for Spain. His adaptability, stamina, and attacking prowess have made him an appealing target for Simeone, who sees him as the perfect successor to De Paul both tactically and physically.
However, despite Atlético’s strong interest, Barcelona quickly shut down any possibility of a sale. Even amid their financial difficulties, the club views Fermín as a cornerstone of new head coach Hansi Flick’s plans. Flick is reportedly keen to make López a key figure in the squad for the upcoming season.
Though a substantial offer might be tempting on paper, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco and his team believe letting Fermín go—especially to a domestic rival—could weaken the team’s competitive standing.
Nonetheless, Simeone remains persistent. He continues to urge the club’s leadership to keep all options open, as he has yet to identify another candidate who offers what Fermín López brings to the table
