Liverpool’s Teen Star Rio Ngumoha Set for Unique “Car Clause” in First Pro Contract

Liverpool Set to Offer Rio Ngumoha First Pro Deal — With a Unique “Car Clause” Twist

Liverpool are preparing to hand teenage star Rio Ngumoha his first professional contract as he nears his 17th birthday — and it comes with a rare and surprising detail.

According to reports, the club is ready to include a special vehicle agreement in the deal, something typically unheard of even in senior player contracts.

Ngumoha has been turning heads ever since he made history as Liverpool’s youngest-ever first-team starter, lining up in an FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley at just 16 years and 135 days old. His fearless performances in training since then have reportedly impressed even the senior squad.

After joining from Chelsea’s academy, Ngumoha is expected to officially sign pro terms once he becomes eligible. But with that will come one of the Liverpool academy’s more unusual rules — the “car clause.”

🚗 What is the Car Clause?
The policy requires academy staff to approve any vehicle a young player wants to drive to the club. There’s no restriction on the model, but flashy displays of wealth aren’t encouraged.

🗣️ Academy Director Alex Inglethorpe explained on the ‘We Are Liverpool’ podcast:

“It’s not just about what the manager thinks — senior players notice these things too. Driving in with a flashy Range Rover at 17? That’s not the message we want.”

He emphasized that the rule isn’t about being harsh, but about teaching humility and building a strong foundation for long-term success.

Ngumoha, who recently featured in a pre-season clash against Preston North End, is expected to divide his time between the academy and first team this season. Whether he drives into training or not, one thing’s for sure — Liverpool believe he’s a player worth investing in, both on and off the pitch.
