Arsenal Receive Major Viktor Gyökeres Boost as Sporting Step Up Replacement Search
Arsenal’s long pursuit of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres has taken a significant step forward, with Sporting CP now accelerating talks to sign his replacement — a move widely seen as a green light for Gyökeres’ impending exit.
football.london understands that an agreement in principle was reached between Arsenal and Sporting over a deal worth €63.5 million (£55 million) guaranteed, with a further €10 million (£8.7 million) in performance-based add-ons. However, negotiations had slowed in recent days over the structure and conditions of the add-ons, such as appearance milestones, goal targets, or major trophies like the Premier League or Champions League.
Despite the delay, Arsenal have now received a positive breakthrough. Sporting CP are actively pursuing a €25 million (£21.6 million) move for Colombian striker Luis Suárez from Almería — a clear sign that they are preparing for Gyökeres’ departure.
The 27-year-old Gyökeres, who scored 39 goals in all competitions last season, has remained firm in his desire to join Arsenal, reportedly rejecting other approaches including interest from Manchester United. He is understood to have agreed personal terms on a five-year contract, and remains on standby for a medical and official announcement once the final agreement between clubs is struck.
With Arsenal already on their pre-season tour in Asia, Gyökeres could fly out to join Mikel Arteta’s squad immediately after completing his move.
All signs now point toward an imminent deal — a major boost for Arsenal as they look to add a prolific striker to lead the line heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
