According to Diario AS, Manchester City’s Rodri Hernández has emerged as the top long-term target. Club officials are keeping a close eye on the 29-year-old, particularly after his recent return at the Club World Cup following a nine-month recovery from an ACL injury.
Madrid scouts have already evaluated his performances in the tournament and plan to continue monitoring him once the Premier League resumes. A potential move is being considered for 2026 — provided Rodri regains peak form and does not sign a contract extension with City.

While Rodri is seen as the ideal choice, Real Madrid is also weighing backup options. Inter Milan’s Nicolò Barella, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández, and Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister are all being considered.
However, the board is reportedly cautious about the high costs tied to these players, with price tags expected to exceed €100 million — a figure the club is hesitant to pay for a midfield reinforcement.
Rodri, on the other hand, could become a more financially viable option. If he enters the final year of his City contract in 2026 without an extension, Madrid might be able to secure him for a significantly reduced fee.
