Real Madrid Target Rodri to Strengthen Midfield Under Xabi Alonso
Real Madrid have been active in the summer transfer market with four signings already secured, but their business may not be done yet. The club is now turning its attention to bolstering the defensive midfield — a position that lacked consistency last season.
As Xabi Alonso gears up for his debut season as head coach, the focus is on reinforcing the spine of the team. Although Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dani Ceballos have all played as holding midfielders, none have consistently impressed in that role, prompting the club to search for a more dependable option.
According to Diario AS, Real Madrid have identified Manchester City’s Rodri Hernández as their ideal long-term solution. The Spanish international, now 29, recently returned from a lengthy ACL injury to feature in the Club World Cup, where Madrid scouts closely monitored his performances. Further assessments will be made once the Premier League resumes.
Madrid are reportedly considering a potential move for Rodri in 2026 — but only if he recovers his top form and does not extend his contract with Manchester City, which expires that year.
Exploring Backup Plans
While Rodri remains the preferred choice, Madrid are also evaluating other midfield options. Nicolò Barella (Inter Milan), Enzo Fernández (Chelsea), and Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool) are all being considered as alternatives.
However, there’s growing concern among club decision-makers about the high costs tied to these players, with each likely commanding a fee close to or above €100 million — a figure the club is hesitant to meet for a midfield reinforcement.
Rodri, by contrast, could become a more affordable target if his contract situation at City remains unresolved. With just one year left on his deal by the summer of 2026, Madrid may be able to negotiate a significantly reduced fee.
As Real Madrid enter a new era under Alonso, securing a solid and consistent presence at the base of midfield is a top priority. Whether it’s Rodri or another strategic signing, the club is determined to bring greater stability to this critical position.
