A journalist reports that discussions between Liverpool and Konate are currently stalled, but a deal remains feasible.

Liverpool’s Contract Talks with Konaté Stalled Amid Growing Transfer Speculation

Liverpool still hopes to secure Ibrahima Konaté’s long-term future at Anfield, but negotiations over a new deal have reportedly hit a standstill, according to journalist David Lynch.

While concerns are growing over the 26-year-old’s contract status, Lynch shared some optimism from sources close to the player. “Real Madrid’s interest is real,” he told Sports Mole, “but those close to Konaté believe his preference remains to stay at Liverpool.”

This uncertainty comes in the wake of fears surrounding another prolonged contract saga, reminiscent of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s controversial move to Madrid for £10 million. The tension has been further stoked by Foot Mercato reports claiming Konaté is seeking a fresh challenge, has requested a 40% salary bump, and is eyeing an exit in 2026.

Despite the stalled talks, Lynch says no firm decision has been made. “Negotiations have taken place, but they’ve hit a pause. That said, things haven’t broken down irreparably,” he explained.

Konaté was a cornerstone of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning defense last season, forming a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk. Letting him leave—especially on a free—would be a major setback, particularly in the aftermath of the Trent situation.

Lynch underlined the need for urgency but advised against panic. “Liverpool still haven’t put forward a compelling offer. Things are currently static… but there’s plenty of time to resolve it.”

If no progress is made by next summer, Liverpool could be forced to consider offers, with Real Madrid, PSG, and Barcelona all monitoring the situation. “You can’t assume every squad rebuild works,” Lynch added. “Liverpool already revamped both full-back positions. Losing a key centre-back too would add to the challenge.”

This backdrop helps explain Liverpool’s growing interest in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who may be seen as a long-term replacement if Konaté departs.

For now, Liverpool supporters will be hoping Konaté remains committed and avoids a drawn-out, distracting contract saga. “The hope is that it won’t spiral,” Lynch concluded, “even if it doesn’t result in a new contract.”
