Report: Liverpool is preparing to pursue a new target for an ‘exceptional’ defender following Gomez’s injury setback.

🚨 Liverpool Intensify Centre-Back Search After Gomez Injury

Liverpool is ramping up efforts to sign a new centre-back following Joe Gomez’s early exit from the club’s pre-season tour in Asia. The 28-year-old is heading back to Merseyside for treatment on a minor Achilles issue, leaving Jurgen Klopp with just two senior centre-backs: Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.

During a recent match against AC Milan, both Van Dijk and Konaté featured for 45 minutes, while Ryan Gravenberch and Kostas Tsimikas were deployed in makeshift defensive roles—highlighting the squad’s lack of depth in central defense.

With the summer transfer window nearing its close, Liverpool is expected to reignite interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. According to Football Insider, the 25-year-old is open to a move to Anfield, despite Palace’s firm £50 million valuation.

The urgency is clear. After selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and now dealing with Gomez’s setback, Liverpool can’t afford to repeat past mistakes of relying on makeshift defenders or inexperienced youth in a title-challenging campaign.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is well aware of the risks. The club has reinforced other areas this summer but has yet to bolster the centre-back position.

Palace are expected to resist any move for Guehi, especially as he enters the final year of his contract and has shown little interest in an extension. However, with Guehi earning praise from Gareth Southgate—who labeled him “exceptional” during Euro 2024—Liverpool view him as a priority target.

With Luis Díaz’s sale expected to bring in around £65 million, a significant portion of those funds could go toward landing Guehi. Strengthening the backline is now a top priority for Klopp and his team as they aim to solidify their title ambitions.
