Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško, 22, has chosen to join Liverpool, despite last-minute efforts by Manchester United and strong interest from Newcastle United, who were eyeing him as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak.
The decision marks a significant win for Liverpool as they strengthen their attacking lineup under new manager Arne Slot. Initially considered outsiders in the race for Šeško, Liverpool secured the striker after he netted 13 goals in the 2024/25 Bundesliga season and 21 overall.
Manchester United, led by Ruben Amorim, had made Šeško their top forward target, initiating informal talks and leveraging director Christopher Vivell’s past connections from Salzburg and Leipzig. United’s need for a central striker grew urgent following Marcus Rashford’s loan to Barcelona and the uncertain futures of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony. However, Šeško ultimately favored Liverpool, reportedly due to their Champions League stature and Slot’s attack-minded approach.
Newcastle also pursued Šeško aggressively, viewing him as an ideal successor to Isak, who may leave the club. Despite presenting an attractive financial offer and long-term project, Newcastle couldn’t sway Šeško, who had a gentleman’s agreement with Leipzig allowing a move for €80m–€90m (£69m–£78m). The striker and his representatives were more aligned with Liverpool’s vision.
Social media further fueled rumors when fans noticed Šeško followed Liverpool on Instagram and highlighted a past match against them on his feed—strong signs of his preference.
Šeško’s signing gives Liverpool a powerful and mobile No. 9—his speed (35.69 km/h), strength, and hold-up play are ideal for Slot’s high-intensity, aerially dominant system. He offers a more consistent alternative to United’s Rasmus Højlund and greater upside than Newcastle’s dependency on Isak. With 39 goals in 87 games for Leipzig, Šeško’s arrival, for a fee close to €80m plus add-ons, sends a clear message of intent from Liverpool.
The transfer is a major blow to Manchester United, who now must rely on Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, along with newcomers Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha—none of whom are proven central strikers.
For Liverpool, Šeško’s signing is seen as the start of a new era. Fans are already drawing comparisons to Erling Haaland, hopeful that the Slovenian can have a similar impact. With the transfer window set to close in August 2025, Liverpool appear well-equipped for a serious Premier League title challenge, while United and Newcastle reassess their strategies.
