Arsenal’s summer transfer activity shows no signs of slowing, as the North London club looks to offload an underperforming player – a move that could set the stage for the signing of Crystal Palace’s standout attacker, Eberechi Eze.
Having already made a splash in the market with six new arrivals – including notable names like Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi – manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta seem determined to keep strengthening the squad as they aim for a serious Premier League title challenge.
Despite a recent pre-season loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal’s preparations for the new season remain largely positive. Arteta is reshaping the squad around his long-term vision, and several fringe players are now being considered for sale to free up space for high-impact signings.
One such player is Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira. Signed from FC Porto in 2022 for around £34 million, Vieira came in with big expectations but has struggled to live up to them. Plagued by injuries and inconsistency, he’s yet to secure a regular place in Arteta’s plans.
According to journalist Sebastien Vidal, German side VfB Stuttgart has entered discussions with Arsenal over a permanent deal for Vieira. Though the move could see the Gunners incur a financial loss, it may be necessary to clear room – both in terms of budget and squad space – to pursue a top-tier addition like Eze.
Eze, a long-time Arsenal target, has been on the club’s radar since last summer, but interest has reportedly intensified in recent weeks. Arsenal is said to be waiting for his £68 million release clause to expire, which would allow more flexibility in negotiations with Palace.
The 27-year-old enjoyed an outstanding campaign last season, racking up 14 goals and 11 assists in 43 matches – an impressive return, particularly at a mid-table club. His performances have made him one of the most sought-after attacking midfielders in the Premier League.
Analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed Eze a “superstar” last season – a label that reflects his dazzling footwork, creativity, and scoring ability. His profile could provide Arsenal with much-needed variety in attack, especially when facing deep defensive setups. He would also offer tactical versatility alongside Martin Ødegaard in Arteta’s preferred 4-3-3 system.
Eze also played a pivotal role in Palace’s fairy-tale FA Cup run, scoring crucial goals in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final. His combination of flair and composure in big moments makes him exactly the kind of player Arteta values.
Meanwhile, Vieira’s output has fallen short of expectations. Over two seasons, he has contributed just 13 goals and assists in 49 appearances for Arsenal. Even during a loan spell back at Porto, he registered only 11 goal involvements in 42 matches – a return deemed underwhelming.
Though once hailed as “exceptional” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Vieira’s potential remains largely unrealized in England. While he has shown brief glimpses of promise, he hasn’t convinced fans or the coaching staff that he’s ready for a more prominent role.
With Eze firmly in their sights, Arsenal sees Vieira’s departure as a key step toward unlocking the resources needed for the move. Though the fee from Stuttgart – believed to be around £25 million – would represent a £9 million loss, the investment in a proven Premier League performer like Eze may justify the hit.
Ultimately, Arsenal’s pursuit of Eze reflects their drive to evolve and compete at the highest level. With a front line potentially featuring Gyokeres, Ødegaard, Saka, and Eze, the Gunners could be assembling one of the league’s most exciting attacking units.
