Liverpool Close in on Marc Guehi After Reaching Personal Terms
Liverpool are moving quickly in the transfer market, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the club has reached an agreement on personal terms with Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Negotiations are now focused on securing a £35 million package, with the deal potentially wrapped up in the coming days—just ahead of Friday’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth.
Guehi, who played against Liverpool at Wembley in Palace’s FA Community Shield victory on penalties last Sunday, has been a long-term target for the Reds. With his contract at Selhurst Park entering its final year, the England international is unlikely to sign an extension, allowing for a relatively modest fee given his quality.
Liverpool aren’t the only admirers. Newcastle made multiple unsuccessful bids for him last summer, while Tottenham attempted a late £70 million move in January. However, Guehi’s stock has only risen since joining Palace from Chelsea in 2021, with his consistent Premier League displays, England caps, and role in Palace’s historic FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May.
Importantly, Romano notes that Liverpool’s push for Guehi will not affect their pursuit of Italian Under-19 international Giovanni Leoni. The young defender is seen not as competition for Guehi but as a long-term addition to bolster depth, with the club mindful of Virgil van Dijk’s contract expiring in 2026 and Ibrahima Konaté entering his final year without an extension.
Manager Arne Slot has made strengthening the defence a priority. Reflecting on recent matches, including conceding twice against Palace at Wembley, Slot praised his team’s improved attacking output but acknowledged the need to tighten up defensively.
With both Guehi and Leoni on the radar, Liverpool’s backline could be set for a significant shake-up—one aimed at ensuring both short-term stability.
