Liverpool vs Bournemouth paused after Antoine Semenyo alerts referee to alleged racist abuse from the crowd

The first game of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign wast stopped in the first half following an alleged racist comment.

Defending champions Liverpool kicked off their title defence at Anfield on Friday night against Bournemouth in a lively, end-to-end clash.

The game was briefly halted just before the 30-minute mark when referee Anthony Taylor stopped play as Liverpool prepared to take a corner. Taylor walked over to the technical areas to speak with both managers, Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola, prompting some initial confusion among players and fans.

Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury later revealed that the interruption came after Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo reported hearing a racist remark from the crowd. Taylor, along with his fourth official, addressed the situation with the managers, while stadium stewards also became involved in the discussions.

Following a physical duel on the right flank with Alexis Mac Allister, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo — who had reported the racist remark — was consoled by manager Andoni Iraola and embraced by former teammate Milos Kerkez before play resumed.

Liverpool then found their breakthrough in the 37th minute. New signing Hugo Ekitike, who had already netted in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, opened his Premier League account by slotting home to put the Reds 1-0 ahead. The French striker marked the moment with a heartfelt gesture, holding up the No. 20 in tribute to the late Diogo Jota.

The Premier League has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on discriminatory behaviour, warning that offenders face stadium bans and possible legal action. Supporters are urged to report abuse directly via the league’s official website.
