Arteta: Arsenal Must Be “Like a Hammer” in Pursuit of Liverpool

Mikel Arteta has challenged his Arsenal side to remain relentless as they look to chase down Premier League leaders Liverpool, who currently hold a nine-point advantage.

The Gunners head to Brentford on New Year’s Day for the league’s only fixture, knowing victory would move them into second place above Nottingham Forest and cut Liverpool’s lead to six points.

While Arne Slot’s Liverpool have surged ahead with 14 wins from 18 matches, Arsenal remain unbeaten in their last eight league outings, including a commanding 5-1 win at Crystal Palace in their most recent away game.

“It doesn’t depend on us,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference. “We have to continue to be like a hammer, be there every day, every day. If someone wins all the matches, then congratulate them and go to the next season. But if they don’t… we will be there.”

Busy January ahead

The trip to Brentford marks the start of a hectic month for Arsenal, featuring a north London derby against Tottenham, an FA Cup third-round clash with Manchester United, and an EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle United.

Trossard’s “moaning” mentality

Arteta also highlighted the competitive edge of Leandro Trossard, praising the Belgian’s relentless drive even if it means constant complaints in training.

“Leo, naturally, is a little bit of a moaner, but I like that because he’s very competitive,” Arteta explained. “In training, he’s always on at the referee’s decisions because he wants to win. That’s what I love. When he’s not at his best, he’s not happy — but that pushes him. That’s why when he comes on, he makes an impact. He’s got that hunger of, ‘I’m going to show you.’”

Sterling nearing return

With Bukayo Saka still sidelined following a hamstring procedure, Arsenal could be boosted by the earlier-than-expected return of Raheem Sterling from a knee injury.

“He was gutted because he had a good game against Palace in the EFL Cup, he could have scored two goals and made an assist, and then he got injured in training,” said Arteta. “That was his opportunity because naturally, he would have played in that position. But knowing Raz, I think he will be back quite soon.”

As for his New Year’s resolution? Arteta kept it simple: “Keep everybody fit. That’s it.”
