Enzo Maresca has dismissed the idea of signing the current best Dutch centre-back as a replacement for injured Levi Colwill, insisting the defender lacks the experience to fit into his three-man system. This decision has left the Blues scrambling for defensive solutions just days before the Premier League opener.

Maresca has stressed that Jorrel Hato, though talented, is more suited to left-back and lacks the experience required to operate in the central role of a back three—an area vital to Chelsea’s tactical framework. With the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace approaching, the Blues face a precarious situation. Maresca’s push for a new centre-back has been resisted by the board, who prefer to trust internal solutions.

For now, the likely starters are Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah, with Benoît Badiashile sidelined until September and Wesley Fofana still battling fitness issues. Academy prospect Josh Acheampong could be called upon, but his lack of top-level experience makes him a risky option.

Maresca’s frustration stems not only from Colwill’s absence but also from Chelsea’s transfer priorities. Despite spending over £240 million this summer on attacking reinforcements such as Liam Delap and João Pedro, the club has yet to address the defensive gap. The manager has been clear that he wants a player who can replicate Colwill’s composure on the ball and his ability to break lines from deep.

Complicating matters further, Nicolas Jackson is suspended for the Palace clash, while both he and Renato Veiga have been told they can leave, adding to the sense of uncertainty.

With the board reluctant to sanction another defensive signing, Maresca must prepare for the season with a stretched backline. The situation raises real questions over Chelsea’s readiness and whether internal options will be enough to sustain their ambitions.
