Klopp Could Hand Liverpool the Key to Landing Alexander Isak
Liverpool’s chase for Alexander Isak is gathering fresh momentum – and it could be boosted by none other than Jurgen Klopp, the club’s legendary former manager.
The Reds have already tested Newcastle’s resolve with a £110m bid, only to see it knocked back. The Magpies are demanding closer to £150m, a figure that would not only set a new British transfer record but also make Isak the third-most expensive player in football history.
Liverpool are working to generate the funds. Tyler Morton’s £15m switch to Lyon has already helped, while Darwin Núñez is edging towards a £46m move to Al-Hilal. Yet, the breakthrough could come from Klopp himself, who is now overseeing global football operations for Red Bull clubs, including RB Leipzig.
According to Bild, Leipzig have set their sights on Harvey Elliott, one of Klopp’s favourite former players. The 22-year-old midfielder, who shone during England U21s’ European Championship triumph, is now valued at £40–50m by Liverpool, depending on whether a buy-back clause is included.
Klopp, who handed Elliott his Liverpool debut back in 2019, is reportedly championing Leipzig’s pursuit. A sale would allow Liverpool to edge far closer to Newcastle’s valuation of Isak. Leipzig, meanwhile, are preparing to fund the deal through the expected departure of Xavi Simons, who is in talks with Chelsea over a £61m move.
Before leaving Anfield, Klopp admitted one of his few regrets was not giving Elliott more minutes last season:
“If I regret one thing a little bit, it’s that Harvey didn’t play often enough. In January, with injuries, he was probably our best player… then everyone came back, and he had minutes here and there, but he didn’t start anymore.”
With Klopp now playing an indirect role in shaping Liverpool’s finances, the Reds could soon have the resources needed to push Newcastle into a decision.
If everything falls into place, Klopp may well end up gifting his former club a £50m boost – paving the way for Liverpool to finally land their marquee target, Alexander Isak.
