Liverpool Step Up Alexander Isak Pursuit as Newcastle Rift Deepens

Liverpool’s chase for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has gathered fresh momentum, with Sky Sports confirming growing tensions at St. James’ Park.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe revealed that Isak has been sidelined from first-team activities after going AWOL during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia. The Sweden international has since been training separately and was omitted from the Sela Cup, signalling a widening rift with the club.
Liverpool had an initial £110 million bid rejected, but are now preparing an improved offer worth £130–140 million. If agreed, the deal would smash the current Premier League transfer record of £116m paid for Florian Wirtz.
Newcastle’s willingness to cash in depends heavily on securing a replacement, with Brentford forward Yoane Wissa at the top of their shortlist. Progress hinges on Brentford wrapping up a move for Dango Ouattara, making the negotiations more complicated.
Despite Howe’s public desire to keep his star striker, Isak has made his intentions clear. He has refused to sign a new contract and, according to reports on X, is pushing for the switch to Anfield.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot sees Isak as a perfect focal point for his revamped attack, particularly after the exits of Luis Diaz and Darwin Núñez and the tragic loss of Diogo Jota. Isak’s 23 league goals last season — second only to Mohamed Salah — underline his quality and versatility.
The Reds are also better positioned financially, with a recent £25m boost from Ben Doak’s expected move to Bournemouth helping fund the transfer.
While a final agreement is not yet in place, Liverpool’s persistence and Isak’s determination to leave Newcastle suggest that a record-breaking move could be imminent as the transfer window enters its final stretch.
