Scott McTominay in line for surprise Man Utd reunion after transfer twist

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay could be set for a surprise reunion with one of his former Manchester United team-mates, it has been reported.

Napoli Eye Manchester United Striker Rasmus Højlund After Lukaku Injury

Scott McTominay was last season’s Serie A MVP, helping Napoli clinch the Scudetto on the final day with 12 goals and four assists, becoming a fan favorite.

Despite reports that Antonio Conte considered leaving Napoli over transfer disagreements last season, a successful crisis meeting and the high-profile free transfer of ex-Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne kept him at the club.

Now, Napoli are reportedly targeting a surprise addition from Manchester United. Italian transfer expert Ciro Venerato claims the Serie A champions are preparing a move for striker Rasmus Højlund. The Dane was left out of United’s squad in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and may have played his final game for the club.

Napoli’s interest comes after Romelu Lukaku suffered a serious thigh injury in a pre-season friendly against Olympiacos. The club confirmed the Belgian has “high-grade” thigh damage, with further assessments needed to determine whether surgery is required.

Venerato reports that Napoli have explored seven potential striker options following Lukaku’s injury. Alongside Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee—also struggling for playing time at United after the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha—is on their shortlist.

Other targets include Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, Lecce’s Nikola Krstovic, and Cagliari’s Roberto Piccoli. Inter Milan’s Mehdi Taremi has reportedly been rejected, as has former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who now plays for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Recent claims linking Mitrovic to Birmingham City were denied, largely due to his £400,000-per-week salary in Saudi Arabia.
