Liverpool’s Pursuit of Marc Guehi Hits Roadblock as Crystal Palace Hold Firm
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi remains at the center of transfer drama, with manager Oliver Glasner insisting he will not be allowed to leave for Liverpool before the club’s crucial Conference League play-off is settled.
Palace secured a 1-0 first-leg victory over Fredrikstad on Thursday night, with Guehi leading the team in the absence of Eberechi Eze, who is close to completing a £67.5m move to Arsenal. While Guehi continues to feature for Palace, negotiations over his future are ongoing, with Liverpool pushing to sign him before the September 1 deadline.
Glasner, frustrated by his lack of squad depth, made it clear that Guehi must stay for now.
“We need him for these games. Everybody knows it,” he told Channel 5. “If Marc leaves, maybe I’ll have to play centre-back myself. We can’t afford to lose more players without replacements.”
Palace are demanding £45m for Guehi, while Liverpool are only willing to go up to £35m, leading to a current stalemate. The club’s second-leg tie in Norway on August 28 could free up a small window for a deal, but time is running out.
Chairman Steve Parish took a more pragmatic stance, acknowledging that player sales are sometimes necessary.
“If Marc wants to sign a new contract, then he can stay. But every club has to sell players to comply with the rules. We’ll see how things develop in the next 11 days.”
The departure of Eze has already forced Palace into a delicate balancing act, with Parish confirming reinforcements will be needed.
“We’ll bring players in — maybe not individuals of the same quality, but enough to give us a stronger base and more options.”
For now, Guehi’s future remains uncertain, but with Arsenal finalizing Eze’s exit and Liverpool circling, Palace are under mounting pressure as the transfer deadline approaches.
