Arne Slot Facing Right-Back Dilemma Ahead of Newcastle Clash
Liverpool boss Arne Slot could be forced into a bold tactical experiment when his side travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle on Monday night.
With tensions already running high between the clubs amid the Alexander Isak transfer saga, the Reds head into the game struggling for options at right-back. Jeremie Frimpong is out with a hamstring injury, Conor Bradley has only just returned to training after a similar issue, and Joe Gomez remains short of full match sharpness.
Szoboszlai as a surprise solution
According to Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst, Slot may turn to an unlikely stand-in — Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian midfielder briefly covered at right-back during pre-season and could be asked to reprise the role. While far from a natural defender, Szoboszlai’s energy, composure, and ability to drive forward might help Liverpool stay composed in what is sure to be a hostile environment.
His relentless running could also be key in matching Newcastle’s physical midfield, with Bradley potentially an option from the bench if required later in the game.
A gamble early in the campaign
It’s far from an ideal scenario for Slot, who would prefer not to shift a midfielder into defense so early in the season. Yet, with injuries limiting his choices, Szoboszlai may be the most practical stopgap solution to deal with Newcastle’s threat down the left flank.
If neither Gomez nor Bradley is deemed ready to start, the Hungarian captain looks set to fill the void in what promises to be a fiery encounter under the lights at St James’ Park.
