Xabi Alonso Officially Appointed as Real Madrid Manager, Targets Squad Overhaul
Xabi Alonso has officially taken charge at Real Madrid, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti, who departed after a disappointing campaign to begin his new journey as head coach of the Brazilian national team.
The Spanish tactician, eager to begin his era at the Santiago Bernabéu, requested to join the club earlier than planned — before the Club World Cup — to assess the squad and identify areas in need of reinforcement ahead of next season.
Real Madrid have already secured major signings, including Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and young defender Dean Huysen from Bournemouth, but the club is expected to remain active in the transfer market.
One of Alonso’s main concerns is the left-back position. The club is currently working on a deal for Álvaro Carreras from Benfica, with Alonso determined to add depth and reliability to that side of the defense.
At the same time, the new manager has made it clear that French full-back Ferland Mendy is not part of his plans. Despite being trusted by Ancelotti in the past, Mendy’s injury record and inconsistency have convinced Alonso to move on. Real Madrid will put the 29-year-old on the transfer list, though there are concerns that his fitness issues could make finding a buyer difficult.
With Alonso at the helm, the message is clear: Real Madrid are entering a new era, one where underperforming players will be moved on and new signings will be brought in to restore the club to the very top.
