Arsenal Open Talks for Rennes Star Jeremy Jacquet as Defensive Shake-Up Looms 🔴⚪

Arsenal are in discussions over what could become their seventh signing of the summer, with reports confirming that the club has made initial contact with Rennes regarding highly-rated defender Jeremy Jacquet.

Mikel Arteta has already overseen a busy window, bringing in the likes of Viktor Gyökeres, Martín Zubimendi, and Noni Madueke to strengthen a squad that has finished second in the Premier League three years running. But the Gunners remain active, keen to reinforce before the deadline.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have enquired about Jacquet, who is seen as one of France’s most promising young centre-backs. Talks are at an early stage, but the North London club are prepared to move quickly should one of their current defenders leave.

Why Jacquet?

At just 20, Jacquet has already broken into Rennes’ senior team after a loan spell at Clermont. Despite making only 12 Ligue 1 appearances, his strong physical presence, adaptability across defensive systems, and standout performances with France’s U19s — where he made the Team of the Tournament at the Euros — have made him a top prospect.

Rennes underlined their faith by handing him a new contract until 2029 earlier this year, with club chiefs praising his maturity, athleticism, and leadership potential. Still, Arsenal believe he could be a long-term defensive solution.

What It Means for Arsenal’s Backline

The move comes as Jakub Kiwior, signed in 2023 for £17.6m, weighs up his future. Though Arteta values him as a key squad player, interest from Serie A could tempt him away. Oleksandr Zinchenko has also been linked with a departure, adding urgency to Arsenal’s defensive planning.

If Kiwior stays, Arsenal may wait until next summer to push harder for Jacquet. But if exits accelerate, the club could attempt to bring him to the Emirates before this window closes.

The Bigger Picture

For Rennes, Jacquet is central to their academy-first project. Their sporting director Loïc Désiré recently hailed him as a symbol of the club’s ambition, while Jacquet himself expressed pride in extending his stay and determination to improve further.

Whether Rennes will consider cashing in on their defensive jewel remains to be seen. For now, Arsenal’s interest is clear — and Jacquet is firmly on their radar as part of Arteta’s next evolution.
