Marc Guehi’s only preferred destination in the failed transfer was Liverpool, says BBC journalist

Marc Guehi’s Liverpool Dream Still Alive Despite Deadline Day Collapse

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild looks set to remain a major theme next summer, with Marc Guehi’s stance on his future becoming increasingly clear following the dramatic collapse of his deadline day transfer.

Guehi: “Liverpool or Nothing”

According to BBC Sport’s senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel, the England international made it known that his priority was Liverpool, insisting it would be “Liverpool or nothing” if an offer came forward.

That unwavering position underlines the attraction Anfield holds — a club where current stars like Harvey Elliott are desperate to stay, and new targets are eager to join.

Crystal Palace had, in principle, accepted a £35 million deal for their captain. However, late complications with paperwork after the deadline ultimately caused the agreement to fall through, leaving senior Liverpool officials frustrated at how negotiations unraveled.

Glasner Holds His Ground

Palace boss Oliver Glasner emerged victorious in the short term, keeping hold of his skipper despite losing out on a lucrative fee. The Austrian coach, who enters the final year of his own contract next summer, had repeatedly stated throughout pre-season that Guehi was not for sale.

Although the defender was recovering from a minor hamstring injury during Palace’s summer preparations, he remained professional, respecting the club’s stance and refusing to force a move.

Yet Guehi’s decision not to sign a new contract means uncertainty lingers — and opportunity beckons for Liverpool.

Liverpool Remain in Pole Position

Guehi, who made 44 appearances across all competitions last season and helped Palace to FA Cup glory, is now entering the final year of his deal. Palace attempted to tie him down with fresh terms, but the centre-back declined.

Tottenham, under new manager Thomas Frank, have also shown interest. Still, Guehi’s message is clear: he wants Liverpool, even if it means running down his contract to leave on a free next summer.

Liverpool’s sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has already created a need for reinforcements, while the recent addition of young defender Giovanni Leoni highlights long-term planning. But signing a proven Premier League leader like Guehi would represent both immediate strength and a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk.

The Saga Isn’t Over

For now, Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player. But his determination to wait for Liverpool ensures the story is far from finished. Whether in January or the summer of 2026, Anfield still looks like the final destination for Palace’s captain.
