Fabrizio Romano: Former Liverpool star to rejoin Barcelona

Liverpool fans saw Thiago Alcantara add elegance and composure to their midfield during his four seasons at Anfield, though persistent injuries prevented him from truly reaching his best.

Now, the former Spain international is beginning a new chapter in coaching, with Fabrizio Romano confirming his return to Barcelona as part of Hansi Flick’s backroom staff.

Thiago set for Barcelona coaching role
Romano revealed on YouTube that Thiago, who previously played for Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool, has agreed to join Flick’s coaching team, with contracts already being prepared. He noted that Thiago was eager to take on the role, while Flick was equally enthusiastic about working with him again, having briefly involved him in his staff last year.

Since retiring at the end of the 2023/24 season, Thiago had a short stint with Flick before tax complications kept him in Merseyside following his Liverpool departure. Those issues are now resolved, clearing the way for his return to Catalonia.

Could Liverpool be in his coaching future?
Thiago’s Liverpool career was disrupted by injuries, limiting him to 98 appearances, but he still produced flashes of brilliance under Jurgen Klopp. Known for his sharp footballing mind and deep understanding of the game—qualities Romano highlighted—there is speculation he could one day come back to Anfield in a coaching capacity.

For now, his priority is to gain valuable experience alongside Flick, who also managed him during his Bayern Munich days. Meanwhile, Liverpool have already reshaped their coaching staff under Arne Slot, bringing in Giovanni van Bronckhorst this season. Still, Thiago’s move into coaching keeps alive the possibility of a future return to Merseyside in a different role.
