Liverpool’s build-up to Sunday’s clash with Burnley has received a major boost with the return of Jeremie Frimpong — though his comeback also hands Arne Slot a tactical dilemma.
Frimpong’s fitness poses a selection puzzle
As reported by The Athletic’s James Pearce, the Dutch full-back returned to training on Wednesday after missing the last two league matches with a hamstring issue.
Signed for £30m from Bayer Leverkusen, Frimpong limped off on the opening weekend against Bournemouth and stayed on Merseyside during the international break to continue his recovery.
The 24-year-old has already impressed teammates with his dynamism, but Liverpool have coped well in his absence. Dominik Szoboszlai has shone as an emergency right-back — even earning a place in the Premier League Team of the Week — while Conor Bradley has also regained fitness, giving Slot three options for the position.
With six games coming up in just 17 days across three competitions, The Athletic suggests Frimpong will be eased back gradually rather than rushed straight into the starting XI.
Isak joins training, Gomez and Chiesa back in action
There was further encouragement at Kirkby with £125m signing Alexander Isak taking part in training for the first time since completing his move from Newcastle United. After a brief outing with Sweden during the international break, the striker is now beginning to settle in with his new teammates.
Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa also featured, having skipped international duty. Both could play key roles in the rotation plan over the coming weeks as Liverpool navigate a packed schedule.
The Reds have already spent heavily this summer, bringing in Isak and Florian Wirtz among others. But with the games piling up, Slot’s ability to rotate smartly could prove just as important as the signings themselves in keeping Liverpool competitive on all fronts.
