Alexander Isak, Harvey Elliott, and Jadon Sancho were among the big names to make a deadline day move when the English window closed on September 1 – but there could still be more major transfer business to come this summer
Barcelona Face Shock Saudi Interest in Teen Talent Marc Bernal
The European transfer window may be closed, but Saudi Arabian clubs remain active until September 23 — leaving Europe’s top sides vulnerable to late departures.
Barcelona could be among the biggest casualties, with reports from Saudi outlet Okaz Sports suggesting that 18-year-old midfielder Marc Bernal has emerged as a target for Saudi Pro League sides.
The La Masia graduate, widely regarded as one of Spain’s most promising young talents, made his La Liga debut in August 2024 and featured three times early in the 2024/25 campaign. His maturity in defensive midfield quickly caught attention across Europe.
However, his rise was cruelly halted after he suffered a season-ending cruciate ligament injury, cutting short what could have been his breakout year in Barça’s senior squad.
Despite this setback, Bernal’s reputation remains high. He has already impressed on the international stage with Spain’s Under-17s and is tipped to challenge for senior honours once fully fit.
Barcelona, who reclaimed the La Liga title last season with a youthful squad led by Pedri and Lamine Yamal, see Bernal as part of their long-term future. Losing him now — particularly to Saudi Arabia’s growing project — would be a bitter blow.
With the Saudi transfer window still open, Bernal’s situation will be closely monitored. For Barcelona, keeping hold of their academy jewel may prove as important as any summer signing
Al Nassr Eye Barcelona Starlet Marc Bernal — But Hansi Flick Blocks Move
Saudi giants Al Nassr are reportedly exploring a shock late move for Barcelona wonderkid Marc Bernal, according to Okaz Sports. The 18-year-old midfielder, currently sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury, is considered one of La Masia’s brightest prospects and had broken into the first team before his setback.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s side have already lured defender Íñigo MartĂnez from Camp Nou this summer and are weighing up a bid for Bernal as they look to bolster their midfield. Ronaldo, now 40 but still prolific after scoring 25 league goals last season, is determined to fire Al Nassr to a Saudi Pro League title after finishing second to Al Hilal.
However, Barcelona Universal report that a transfer is highly unlikely. Manager Hansi Flick views Bernal as “an integral part of the club’s present and future,” especially with injuries to Gavi and Frenkie de Jong thinning midfield options.
While Al Nassr may continue their ambitious pursuit of Europe’s rising stars, Barcelona are expected to stand firm, keeping hold of Bernal as they plan for both the short and long term.
