Arne Slot Breaks Silence on Liverpool’s Failed Move for Marc Guehi
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has admitted the Reds came very close to landing Marc Guehi before the summer transfer deadline — but insists the squad still has plenty of quality at centre-back.
Speaking in his press conference, Slot confirmed just how advanced talks had been:
“It would be ridiculous if I were to deny that we were close to signing him. That is so out in the open that that would be ridiculous.”
The deal ultimately collapsed late in the window, but Slot was keen to stress that such twists are part of football:
“These things happen… players think they are close to moving somewhere else, and at the last moment things change.”
Liverpool’s defensive depth
Despite missing out on Guehi, Slot highlighted his confidence in the defenders already at his disposal. He praised Ibrahima Konaté, Virgil van Dijk, and Joe Gomez, while pointing to the arrival of Giovanni Leoni and the versatility of Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo, both of whom can provide cover.
“It’s not like all of a sudden we don’t have options in that position anymore,” Slot said.
Guehi’s current situation
Slot also spared a thought for Guehi, who remains at Crystal Palace, where he has won both the Charity Shield and the FA Cup under a manager Slot described as “very good.”
“It’s a pity, not only for us but for the player I think… Let’s see what the future brings for him and for us.”
While the Reds missed out this time, Slot’s words suggest Liverpool may not have closed the door on pursuing Guehi again in the future.
