Liverpool Eye Adam Wharton as January Transfer Target
Liverpool are reportedly preparing for another major move in the upcoming January transfer window, despite already completing a record-breaking summer of signings.
The Reds spent over €450 million in the last window, bringing in Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi, and Freddie Woodman. Their heavy investment has left them with a squad well-equipped to challenge for the 2024/25 Premier League title.
Not every pursuit was successful, however. A deal for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi collapsed after the Eagles pulled out of negotiations late on.
Adam Wharton on Liverpool’s Radar
Looking ahead, manager Arne Slot has his eyes on Guehi’s Palace teammate Adam Wharton. According to journalist Dave Ockop, Liverpool are seriously considering a January approach for the 21-year-old midfielder, who has also attracted interest from Real Madrid. Despite rival competition, Wharton is believed to favor a move to Anfield.
A deal in January is possible, but any transfer would likely exceed £60 million and depend on Liverpool’s broader strategy in the winter market.
Rising Star at Palace
Since arriving from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, Wharton has made a rapid impact at Selhurst Park. His performances earned him a first England call-up in June, followed by a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad in Germany. To date, he has made 49 appearances for Palace.
Slot Praises Recruitment Model
Reflecting on Liverpool’s ambitious rebuild, Slot highlighted the club’s recruitment strategy:
“This is the model the club operates on. The ownership, along with Richard, Michael, and everyone involved, deserves credit for what we’ve done this window. We’ve managed to generate our own budget through player sales and by winning the league. We’ve brought in younger players than those we sold, potentially future-proofing the squad. The fact that everyone is focusing on who we’ve signed shows the strength of our recruitment.
