Injury scare for Alvarez ahead of Anfield showdown with Liverpool

Liverpool vs Atletico: Injury Concern for Julian Alvarez Ahead of Anfield Clash

Liverpool’s Champions League opener has taken on added intrigue after Atletico Madrid forward Julián Álvarez sparked fitness concerns just days before his side’s trip to Anfield.

The Argentine striker, who arrived from Manchester City in August 2024, was withdrawn at half-time during Atletico’s 2-1 La Liga victory over Villarreal. Spanish reports suggested the substitution was precautionary after Álvarez felt discomfort in the first half.

Simeone Provides Update

Atletico boss Diego Simeone urged caution when asked post-match:

“Until he wakes up tomorrow and gets through his first few hours after the discomfort he had. We hope it’s nothing and we trust he’ll be back in top condition as soon as possible.”

Álvarez, 25, has quickly established himself as the focal point of Atletico’s attack, hitting 29 goals and eight assists in 57 appearances last season. Any absence would be a significant blow for Simeone’s men as they prepare to face the Premier League champions.

Alvarez Responds

Looking to calm fears, Álvarez took to Instagram after the Villarreal win, writing: “Happy about the victory. Now focused on the first Champions League match.” The message hinted at confidence he will feature against Liverpool, though doubts linger about his match sharpness.

The Reds are well aware of his threat. During his time at Manchester City, Álvarez scored twice in five appearances against Liverpool, a record that underlines the danger he poses. He was even linked with a move to Anfield this past summer before Liverpool opted to sign Alexander Isak instead.

Key Subplot at Anfield

With Atletico’s trip to Merseyside set to launch the group stage, all eyes will be on Álvarez’s recovery. If he misses out, it could hand Liverpool an early advantage; if he starts, the Anfield crowd may witness one of Europe’s most in-form strikers testing their back line.
