What he has to do’ – Arne Slot reveals what Alexander Isak’s ‘main challenge’ is at Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has outlined what he believes will be Alexander Isak’s toughest hurdle in the coming months.

The Swedish striker joined the Reds from Newcastle United on deadline day after a drawn-out transfer saga. Having pushed for the move, Isak was told to train separately from the Magpies’ first team during his final weeks at St. James’ Park.

Since then, his involvement has been limited. The 25-year-old’s only recent appearance came as a late substitute for Sweden during the international break — his first outing since May. Slot admits that while Isak’s quality is unquestionable, regaining full fitness is the key challenge ahead.

“Getting fit. Getting fit after missing four months of proper team sessions,” Slot told reporters, noting that Liverpool’s new No.9 has already proven himself in the Premier League with Newcastle.

“The main challenge is to get to the point where he can consistently play 90 minutes — and then three times a week if needed. Once he reaches that level, the pressing and intensity we demand will follow. The goals and attacking brilliance are already there.”

Isak arrives at Anfield with an impressive record: 27 goals and six assists in 42 appearances last season, including a goal in Newcastle’s cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley. That form convinced the Reds to spend £125m to secure his signature.

For Slot, easing the striker back into action without overloading him is the priority. Liverpool open their Champions League campaign against Atlético Madrid at Anfield tomorrow, but the Dutch coach made it clear that fans should temper expectations about Isak’s immediate involvement.

“Normally I’d say 99.9 per cent, but in this case, it’s 100 per cent certain he won’t play the full 90 minutes,” Slot confirmed. “It’s a huge game to look forward to, and if people are excited to see him on the pitch, there’s a chance that could happen tomorrow as well.”

As Liverpool prepare for their European opener, all eyes will be on how quickly Isak can build sharpness and settle into life on Merseyside.
