Liverpool’s UEFA Youth League campaign began with concern after summer signing Will Wright was injured during the clash against Atletico Madrid at Kirkby.
The 17-year-old forward, who joined from Salford City in August, went down following a challenge and required lengthy treatment before being stretchered off. According to journalist Ian Doyle on X, Wright appeared to have “jarred his knee” during the incident, describing it as “not good news for summer LFC signing Will Wright.”
It was a cruel blow for the teenager making his UEFA Youth League debut. Wright had only just begun his journey at Kirkby after featuring for Salford’s senior side last season, including appearances in the FA Cup, League Two, and the EFL Trophy against Wolves U21s.
Wright arrived at Liverpool as part of a wider recruitment strategy to strengthen both the first team and academy ranks, which also included the high-profile additions of Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz. For the youth setup, he joined alongside Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni as one of the next generation talents expected to shine.
With over 50 goals scored at youth levels and reported interest from clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City, Wright had been identified as a key prospect for both Liverpool’s academy and Rob Page’s U21s. The hope now is that the setback is not as severe as first feared. The club’s medical and academy staff have vast experience in guiding young players through recovery, keeping alive the prospect of Wright fulfilling his potential and making a senior breakthrough at Anfield in the years to come.
