Liverpool have been warned they could face UEFA disciplinary action after a stormy finish to their 3-2 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
The drama erupted when Virgil van Dijk’s late winner sparked fury from Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who claimed he and his staff were repeatedly “insulted” by sections of the home crowd. Video footage later appeared to show an Atletico staff member spitting toward Liverpool fans in the Main Stand, further escalating tensions.
While one supporter accused of provoking Simeone insisted there were no racial or personal insults, the incident has already drawn UEFA’s attention. Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett told Football Insider:
“These incidents and relevant footage will be thoroughly reviewed to assess culpability and consider future measures to prevent similar occurrences. I expect both clubs to be part of the investigation, as UEFA typically adopts a strict approach in such cases. Fines for both clubs are possible.”
Simeone, who was shown a red card during the chaos, could face punishment, as could the Atletico staff member involved in the alleged spitting. But questions remain over Liverpool’s liability. Standard crowd heckling appeared to be the extent of the abuse, with no clear evidence of targeted personal attacks.
Should UEFA press ahead, Liverpool might still face sanctions under their responsibility for fan behavior. The club could choose to address any inappropriate conduct by issuing bans to individuals involved.
Given Liverpool’s history of run-ins with UEFA, a fine for Wednesday’s events cannot be ruled out, though many argue it would be harsh on the Merseyside club. For now, both Liverpool and Atletico await the governing body’s verdict.
