Liverpool and Arsenal have been put on alert after a Newcastle star stated, “the best I’ve faced.”

Anthony Gordon admitted that Barcelona’s style of play is on another level compared to what is usually seen in the Premier League, after Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to the Spanish giants at St James’ Park.

The winger, speaking after the game, said he was struck by the control Barca had throughout the match, especially in midfield. Marcus Rashford scored both goals for the visitors, who are chasing their first Champions League title in over a decade under new coach Hansi Flick.

Barcelona’s midfield trio of Pedri and Frenkie de Jong dictated the tempo, frustrating Newcastle’s pressing and controlling possession with ease. For Gordon, it was a learning experience:

“The way they keep the ball was a learning experience for us. We don’t face that style in England, not at that level anyway. I thought they were the best I’ve played against in that regard.”

When asked about how rare it was to see a side dominate even through injury time at St James’ Park, Gordon agreed:

“No, I don’t see that often either. We’ve played against top teams like City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal, but their passing and the fluidity of their midfield made it challenging for us to press. It’s not easy to execute that here. We press hard and are very physical, but they performed exceptionally well.”

Barcelona’s victory further cemented their status as one of the competition favorites. With Rashford in form and Flick balancing experience with tactical precision, the Catalan club look well-placed to end their European drought.

Elsewhere, Liverpool and Arsenal both opened their group-stage campaigns with wins, while Chelsea will be the only English side to face Barcelona in the group stage. Thomas Tuchel was in attendance at St James’ Park, watching as Rashford’s brace announced Barca’s intent in style.

Flick, full of praise for his forward, said:

“We have many talented players in offense, and he’s one of them. I’m glad to have him, as he provides us with more options. These two goals will significantly boost his confidence and help him take the next step.”

For Newcastle, the defeat was a harsh but valuable lesson. For Barcelona, it was another statement of intent that the old giants are ready to rise again.
