Hugo Ekitike Reveals Why He Chose Liverpool Over Newcastle
Hugo Ekitike has described his summer move to Liverpool as the defining step of his career, while downplaying speculation that Newcastle United were ever serious contenders for his signature.
Reports during the transfer window suggested Newcastle were leading the chase before Liverpool intervened. But speaking to French outlet Canal+, as relayed by Foot Mercato, the 23-year-old striker explained that such claims were exaggerated.
βI never intended to join Newcastle,β Ekitike clarified. βLiverpool was always my choice. I felt a stronger connection here and knew this was the right time and place for me. I wanted to return to the highest level, better prepared than before, and I believe I made the right decision.β
Ekitike has already hit the ground running at Anfield, scoring four goals in his first seven appearances across all competitions. He stressed that the move came at the perfect moment, following a difficult spell at Paris Saint-Germain, and was essential to reigniting his career.
His comments confirm that no serious talks took place with Newcastle, despite the widespread transfer rumours earlier in the summer.
