Ruben Amorim Responds to Claims He’s Leaving Man Utd for New Club

Ruben Amorim has spoken out publicly for the first time on speculation that he could make a sensational return to Portugal.

Rúben Amorim Shuts Down Benfica Links, Praises Mourinho After United Win

Former Sporting Lisbon boss Rúben Amorim was briefly linked with the Benfica job last week following Bruno Lage’s dismissal earlier this month.

Benfica sit second in the Liga Portugal standings, five points adrift of leaders Porto but still holding a game in hand. Lage’s sacking came in the aftermath of a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Qarabag in their opening Champions League league-phase match.

The vacancy was ultimately filled by José Mourinho, returning to Portuguese football in a blockbuster appointment. Amorim, speaking to A Bola, was quick to heap praise on the legendary coach:

“He’s the best Portuguese manager, and that won’t change. He has always been a very special person for our football and for the world, opening doors for all of us. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for José Mourinho.

I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone in Portugal, and we’re going to enjoy it.”

Despite speculation that he could make a shock switch to Benfica, Amorim was clear that his focus remains firmly on Manchester United, where he took charge earlier this season.

“That’s the way it is—we’ll be here, watching what happens, but focused only on Manchester. That will be my only club.”

Amorim’s United side underlined that message on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League. The match swung early when Blues goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was sent off, and United capitalised to secure all three points.

The victory lifted United to 11th place in the table after five games, a modest but encouraging step in Amorim’s early tenure at Old Trafford.

Despite Manchester United’s win over Chelsea, Rúben Amorim remains under pressure to spark a turnaround after a challenging start to life at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, José Mourinho has officially taken charge at Benfica, just weeks after being dismissed by Turkish side Fenerbahçe. His stint in Istanbul ended following the club’s elimination from the Champions League play-offs—ironically at the hands of Benfica, the very team he now leads.

Mourinho’s new side responded well after their disappointing 3-2 defeat to Qarabag in Europe, claiming a convincing 3-0 league victory over AVS on Saturday to stay in the Liga Portugal title race.
