“Madness” – Liverpool Fans Furious With Arne Slot After Palace Defeat, Branding Wirtz a Flop

Liverpool supporters have erupted in anger at head coach Arne Slot following the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, with many pointing the finger at his team selection and one signing in particular.

The Reds thought Federico Chiesa’s equalizer might salvage a point — even though it came after a controversial Mohamed Salah handball in the buildup — but Eddie Nketiah’s 97th-minute strike sealed Palace’s dramatic victory at Selhurst Park on Saturday, September 27.

It was Liverpool’s first loss of the Premier League season after five straight wins, but the mood among fans quickly soured, with criticism directed at summer arrival Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz Targeted as “Waste of Money”

Deployed on the left wing, the 21-year-old German international struggled to influence the match and was substituted after 74 minutes. Supporters were brutal in their assessments.

One wrote: “Wirtz is a waste of money.” Another went further, calling him “one of the worst signings in football history.”

On X, user @ZeroPa_LFC fumed: “Wirtz will be remembered as one of the worst signings ever.”

Wirtz has now gone seven games without a goal or assist in either the Premier League or Champions League, leaving many questioning Slot’s faith in him.

Fans Split: Wirtz or Slot to Blame?

While some vented their frustration at the player, others held Slot responsible for putting him in the wrong role.

  • @deezy_xi: “I blame Slot today. The selection was baffling. Wirtz on the left wing away to an unbeaten side? Madness.”
  • @futarii1: “How can Wirtz gain confidence if he’s subbed every match after 70 minutes? Ridiculous.”
  • @Braden_LFC: “We’ve got Wirtz and Isak on the pitch, yet neither see the ball. Time to question the system and Slot’s tactics.”

Isak Also Under Fire

Record signing Alexander Isak was equally quiet, offering little threat after previously scoring against Southampton. Fans slammed both the club’s heavy investment in him and Slot’s system, which has failed to get the best out of their expensive new forward line.

Other Concerns for Slot

Defensively, Ibrahima Konaté endured a tough battle with Jean-Philippe Mateta, picking up an early booking. Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch also looked subdued after strong recent form, as Palace forced Liverpool deep into their own half.

Not a Crisis — Yet

Despite the uproar, Liverpool remain top of the Premier League table. But with fans branding Wirtz a flop and questioning Slot’s decisions, pressure is beginning to build. The Reds have escaped with late heroics several times this season — but at Selhurst Park, their luck finally ran out
