was a key part of a winning Manchester City team – but now I could make a shock move to Liverpool

Liverpool Linked with Shock Move for Ex-Man City Star Julián Álvarez

Rumours are swirling that Liverpool could test the waters for a forward who once thrived in sky blue.

During the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns, Julián Álvarez was a vital yet underrated figure in Manchester City’s all-conquering side. While Erling Haaland stole headlines with his goal-scoring feats, the Argentine’s intelligent movement and technical ability made him indispensable to Pep Guardiola’s system.

Since leaving for Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2024, Álvarez has elevated his reputation, scoring 29 goals across competitions in his debut season. Yet whispers in Spain suggest the 25-year-old is unsettled in the capital — and could push for a move as early as next summer.

Frustration in Madrid

Atlético’s stuttering start to the 2025/26 season has done little to help matters. Álvarez endured a poor outing in the 1-1 draw at Mallorca, missing a penalty and a clear chance before being subbed off — an act that cameras caught him reacting to with visible frustration.

Spanish media outlets, including El Chiringuito, claim the striker feels undervalued by Diego Simeone and his staff. Reports allege that figures close to Álvarez believe Simeone “doesn’t know how to manage a world-class star.” Adding intrigue, Atlético are said to be pushing for a contract extension — despite Álvarez already being tied down until 2030. His reluctance to sign could signal deeper discontent.

The Liverpool Question

Would Liverpool seriously consider a move? On paper, it’s complicated. The Reds splashed heavily this summer on Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitiké, limiting both their budget and immediate need for another forward. Unless Wirtz’s form falters, Liverpool may not prioritize a player in Álvarez’s mould.

From Atlético’s side, a sale would be anything but cheap. The Spanish club paid €75m (£65m) plus €20m (£17.5m) in add-ons just a year ago and rarely allow stars to leave without extracting maximum value. That likely prices out Barcelona, given their financial constraints, and could make Liverpool think twice.

Reality Check

For now, the sensible bet is on Álvarez staying at the Metropolitano, at least in the short term. Atlético still see him as central to their plans, and only a major breakdown or extraordinary bid would force their hand.

Still, if the rumblings in Spain hold any truth, a Premier League return might not be as distant as once thought — and Liverpool, along with Europe’s elite, will surely keep watching.
