Mikel Arteta Slams PGMOL Over VAR Chaos in Arsenal’s Dramatic Win at Newcastle
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta launched a scathing attack on PGMOL after his side’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle United, condemning the controversial VAR decision that overturned a first-half penalty at St. James’ Park.
The incident came when Nick Pope clattered into Viktor Gyökeres inside the area. Referee Jarred Gillett immediately pointed to the spot, with replays showing clear contact despite Pope’s slight touch on the ball. But following a lengthy VAR review led by Darren England, Gillett was sent to the monitor and reversed his decision, to the fury of Arsenal’s players, staff, and traveling fans.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Arteta was blunt:
“For me, it’s very clear—VAR shouldn’t intervene. That’s a penalty.”
The Arsenal boss reminded reporters that clubs have been told VAR should only be used to correct a “clear and obvious” mistake, arguing that the officials ignored their own guidelines.
Bukayo Saka, who rarely comments on refereeing, also voiced his frustration:
“It’s decisions like this that always seem to go against us. If it takes that long to overturn, then it’s not a clear and obvious error.”
More Controversy on the Pitch
The penalty incident wasn’t the only flashpoint. Arsenal players felt Saka was repeatedly fouled by Joelinton without punishment, while Riccardo Calafiori saw yellow for what appeared a far softer obstruction. Gyökeres also endured rough treatment, including one challenge where he was dragged down by his face—without even a free-kick awarded.
Arsenal’s Fighting Spirit
Despite the officiating storm, Arsenal found a way through. Substitute Mikel Merino pulled them level with a looping header from Declan Rice’s cross, before Gabriel Magalhães struck deep into stoppage time, converting a superb Martin Ødegaard delivery to seal all three points.
The late victory at one of the league’s toughest away grounds felt like more than just another win. It was a statement of Arsenal’s resilience in their title pursuit—showing that even when the odds, and the officials, seemed against them, they could still deliver.
