David Ornstein reveals unexpected twist in Liverpool’s January transfer plans

Liverpool Cool Interest in Marc Guehi Ahead of January Window

Liverpool may have spent heavily in the summer, but further transfer activity in January hasn’t been completely ruled out. With Geovanni Leoni sidelined long-term following an ACL injury, speculation grew that the club could dip back into the market for a centre-back when the window reopens.

Leoni, a summer arrival, was expected to be one of two new defenders brought in, with Liverpool also exploring an upgrade on Joe Gomez. Marc Guehi came close to joining from Crystal Palace before the move collapsed on deadline day.

Since then, Guehi has remained on Liverpool’s radar, and many anticipated another attempt for his signature in January. However, that no longer appears likely.

No January Move Expected

According to David Ornstein on NBC Sports, Liverpool currently have no plans to pursue Guehi—or any centre-back—this winter.

“They tried for Marc Guehi. It fell apart on deadline day, and I think Liverpool might revisit it in the summer of 2026,” Ornstein said. “I don’t see him leaving Crystal Palace in January, and I’m not expecting Liverpool to target a centre-back then either. Of course, things can change, but it’s not part of the plan right now.”

Ornstein also noted that even if Guehi decides against renewing his Palace contract, a move to Anfield next summer won’t be straightforward.

“Liverpool won’t have a clear path to Guehi because there’ll likely be competition from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.”

While Guehi would be a major addition to Liverpool’s defensive ranks, securing him could prove challenging amid interest from Europe’s elite. Still, there remains quiet confidence at Anfield that the England international could one day make the move to Merseyside.
