Alan Pardew Claims Arne Slot’s Decision to Bench ‘Brilliant’ Star Has Sparked Liverpool’s Defensive Crisis
Alan Pardew has suggested that Liverpool’s defensive struggles this season can be traced back to Arne Slot’s decision to drop Andy Robertson from the starting lineup.
The Reds have endured a difficult start to the campaign, conceding a worrying number of goals and suffering three consecutive defeats, leaving fans uneasy ahead of Sunday’s crucial clash with Manchester United.
Defensive frailties have been a recurring theme, with Liverpool looking far less secure than in previous seasons. The statistics underline the decline: the team has already conceded nine goals in the league, seven more than at the same stage last year.
According to Pardew, much of this regression stems from Slot’s reshuffling of the back line, particularly the decision to marginalize Robertson — one of Liverpool’s most dependable performers in recent years.
“Liverpool haven’t really produced one outstanding performance this season,” Pardew told talkSPORT. “Slot’s made a lot of changes, and while there’s no doubt about the quality in that squad, finding the right balance has been a challenge.
“The full-back positions have especially been an issue. Andy Robertson has been brilliant for Scotland this week, and his exclusion from Liverpool’s starting XI hasn’t helped their defensive solidity.”
The summer saw sweeping changes at Anfield, none more impactful than in defense. The departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid and the decision to make Robertson a backup option disrupted what had been one of the Premier League’s most consistent full-back pairings.
In their place, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have struggled to settle, leaving the defense exposed and lacking chemistry. Pardew believes that Robertson’s experience and leadership have been sorely missed during this transitional phase.
“Liverpool don’t look as compact or as confident at the back,” Pardew added. “Robertson’s energy, communication, and discipline are crucial. Taking him out of the side was a risk — and it’s shown.”
With Liverpool now preparing to face fierce rivals Manchester United, many believe Slot should restore Robertson to the lineup. While Kerkez is regarded as a talented prospect, his form has dipped — his performance in the defeat to Chelsea doing little to strengthen his case.
Given Robertson’s return to full fitness and his impressive displays for Scotland during the international break, the timing may be perfect for Slot to bring the veteran full-back back into the fold.
Robertson’s experience in high-pressure fixtures and proven defensive reliability could provide the stability Liverpool desperately need. As Pardew implies, it might be time for Slot to rely on familiarity and leadership to stop the slide.
