EXCLUSIVE: Dion Dublin Warns Liverpool That Manchester United Are “Due” a Big Win Ahead of Anfield Showdown

LIVERPOOL, UK — Former England striker Dion Dublin has issued a warning to Liverpool FC, suggesting that Manchester United are “due” for a major victory as the fierce North West rivals prepare to face off at Anfield this Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated Premier League clash, the ex-Manchester United forward believes his former club could spring a surprise, even though he still backs Arne Slot’s Liverpool to go the distance in the title race.

“Liverpool, be cautious – it’s going to be a tight match,” Dublin told BBC Sport. “This is one of those games that can go either way. We know Liverpool have outperformed Manchester United for many years, but this rivalry is about tribalism – anything can happen. As a former United player, I hope they win.”

Liverpool head into the derby after suffering three consecutive defeats prior to the international break. Meanwhile, United sit 10th in the table, still searching for their first away win of the season under Rúben Amorim, who will mark his first anniversary in charge next month.

Despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s public backing of Amorim, United’s inconsistency remains a concern. Since their humiliating 7–0 defeat at Anfield in March 2023, they have managed two consecutive draws away to Liverpool, showing signs of resilience in this fixture.

Dublin continued:

“United are overdue for a really strong performance. Liverpool must be careful – even if they’re not at their best, they have world-class players who can change a match in an instant. If they find their rhythm, no one can compete with them… I just hope they don’t find that rhythm on Sunday!”

Last season, Manchester United endured a disappointing campaign, finishing 15th, and their early Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town this term has only intensified pressure on the squad.

“United need to finish in the top four – that’s non-negotiable,” Dublin said. “A club of their stature should always be challenging for the Premier League title and qualifying for the Champions League. At this stage, securing European football would be seen as a success.”

He added that a victory at Anfield could serve as a pivotal moment for the team’s confidence:

“If United beat Liverpool, it will be a huge psychological boost. It would remind the players that they can overcome one of the best teams in the world. That belief can change their entire season.”

The title race remains tight, with Liverpool — who began their defense with five straight wins — now trailing Arsenal, who overtook them before the international break.

Despite that, Dublin insists the race involves several contenders.

“It’s hard to call,” he admitted. “Liverpool are always dangerous, Arsenal have been fantastic again, and Manchester City will be desperate to get back into contention. Even Chelsea could make a push. If Liverpool find their rhythm, though, they’ll be incredibly hard to stop.”
