Liverpool Eyes Nico Schlotterbeck Amid Slowing Guehi Pursuit
Liverpool have reportedly opened negotiations to sign a Bundesliga standout, as they ramp up efforts to secure Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck.
According to TEAMtalk, the Reds have held “initial and positive discussions” over the potential transfer, suggesting that this move is being prioritized rather than treated as a backup option.
Schlotterbeck, 25, is a left-footed German international who has featured in three of the last four Bundesliga Teams of the Season and earned 22 caps for his country since 2021.
Liverpool’s most recent transfer window was widely praised, following the record-breaking arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, both of whom have strengthened Arne Slot’s side considerably.
However, the failure to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace before the deadline was viewed as the only setback.

As Fabrizio Romano noted, Liverpool avoided exploring alternatives, convinced that Isak was the perfect fit. Had that deal collapsed, no other striker would have been pursued, with Hugo Ekitike serving as the backup plan.
By contrast, the Guehi situation is being handled differently. TEAMtalk reports that “Liverpool are already creating noise around both Upamecano and now Schlotterbeck”, signaling that they won’t wait passively if Guehi’s camp entertains other offers.
While Guehi is still Liverpool’s preferred choice, the club’s leadership seems to be preparing for a scenario where Ibrahima Konaté’s contract expiry could necessitate signing two new centre-backs.
